It seems like this question comes up time and time again, so if nobody minds, I thought I would just post a topic with instructions.
1. Save the banner on your computer, either in a file on your harddrive, or on a removable device
2. Go to a hosting site (photobucket.com or imageshack.com which require an account, or tinypic.com which does not require an account but on which the image must be rehosted every so often because the link will expire) and upload the banner
3. Copy the "Direct Link" URL
4. Go to your story summary and click the icon for inserting image (its a little mountain with a sun)
5. Paste the URL in the pop up window
Just always remember to credit, and you're golden.

How do you host an animated banner? Do you follow the same steps or do you save it differently or anything? Sorry if it's a stupid question but I heard that you have to do it differently than a normal banner...

no, I'm pretty sure it's the same thing, hosting-wise.
The different steps are for people who create animated banners, in which case they can't just be saved as a png, they have to be saved for the web (at least in photoshop)

I feel kind of dumb for asking this, but where in the summary is the mountain icon? I don't see it.

when you edit your story summery to add the banner in, the mountain icon should be along the top of the window, above the part where you add the text in.

i think there's a problem with the site you've hosted the banners on.
try going to tinypic.com, or photobucket.
