Hi, I love your graphics they absolutely beautiful. I particularly love the pink only girl sig its totally cutsey. wub.gif You definitely have a personal style, and it shows in every graphic you have. I wish I could give you some constructive crit but everything here looks so shiny and amazing that nothing (to me) needs to be fixed or worked on.

p.s I love your website, its so amazing. I am actually going to be hosted by skeletongrin. <3

Hi Whitney! (: I'm here with your crit, sorry it's taken me this long confusedslant.gif
Anyways, at first I'm going to crit you on the things you pointed out as your weak points and then, if I find anything else, I'll add that in, too happy2.gif

Text. I find that on your first few banners, the text is a bit too small and quite hard to read, so try to keep that in mind. You've got the size down for the most part, though. (:

Another thing I noticed is, the main text oftentimes tends to be smudged quite a bit, so maybe try some here you don't do it? Text does look quite cool when it's smudged and all, but if everything in your gallery is like that, it doesn't show much variety.

Also, towards text colour, try to always choose a colour that stands out enough, but not too much. Right now there are a few graphics like on this and the quote on this, where the text gets lost into the BG a bit. A good thing to use, when choosing text colour, is the eyedropper tool and take a colour fom the background with it smile.gif

Overall, I think that if you keep on trying to fix the things I pointed out, experiment and look what higher ranks' artists do with their text, you should be well on your way quite soon happy2.gif

Use of stock. Erm, for first, I'd say, look over your credit's list, because I noticed you haven't credited Rick Harris on flickr so there might be other people you've forgotten to credit too.
You use a lot of textures on many different layer modes, it seems and with stock images sometimes, too and that makes a lot of your graphics look a bit too all-over-the place. So, maybe try to make a graphic using only stock photos and see how that goes?

Also, a good thing I learned from somuch's composition tut is to use the same stock picture may times on one graphic, because it shows continuity and stuff. Or using pictures from a same shoot certainly helps with the flow, too happy2.gif

I find your 'Shutter Island' and 'My Bloody Valentine' banners really great and creative, so maybe try to do something else that way? The flow on them is so right and the composition too, so yeah, try to use the stock the way you used it on those two banners, perhaps. (:

Overall, I think that your use of stock is quite good, but you should perhaps experiment with it more and try not to make your graphics too overwhelmed by using too much stock.

Colouring. On your first two banners, I find that your colouring is quite violent and muddy. It's quite over the top and all over there and while it's good that you experiment, you should start trying to find your on niche.

Try not to over-contrast things. A nice amount of contrast is good and healthy, but when there's too much of it, people and things start looking odd and not too good.

A thing that I do, because I like to shove a lot of contrast on top my graphics, is to make a new layer from visibled before I start colouring, and set it on Exclusion and loer the opacit, cos it taked away most of the birghtness on the whites and the darkness of blacks, so I can go as crazy as I want to.

Overall, I think that if you experiment more and look out for not going too harsh on the colouring, you'll soon find your own thing to do happy2.gif

Over-overall tongue1.gif Your gallery is quite good, but I think it needs quite a bit work on it. Just try not to go overboard with things and just keep it sensible smile.gif
I really hope I wasn't too harsh or horrible on you and feel free to PM/comment me, if I was unclear about anything or if you need some help with something or whatever happy2.gif

i'm in an a7x mood just looking at your gallery title, haha.

i love your dark graphics, they're kind of creepy but clear, you know? like, you haven't over-stepped the mark and gone for a completely black canvas. tongue1.gif i know it's the first graphic, so it doesn't inspire confidence in my talent-picking skills, but i love the composition and text on +this; it all fits together so seamlessly. (and it's true blood, which may or may not contribute to this). and +thiiiiiis is so adorable. XD your colouring just made her eyes pop. :3 (not - not, like, in the creepy way. in the cute way. like you want to eat her right up. again, not in the creepy way, but in the cute way.). i love your hayley blend, it's a brilliant use of textures. XD

and i'm stopping because it's 4 am and i'm going to end up squeeing over everything. but just know i love your gallery. :3

hello, sorry that this critique took so long, i've been super busy the last couple of days. because you have about a billion banners, i probably wont go into bucket-loads of depth (because they're pretty good anyway) but i'll still go over the things you need to know. wink.gif now, let's get down to business.

so the only real suggestion i have here is to make some more!
i love your current icons, they're creative, the colouring is spot
on and the text fits in well (i can't make icons with text.) They
have this lovely smoothness about them. the cuts are really
quite good, the images are sharp yet remain sort of soft - i truly
like these icons.
  • good cuts, text, concept
  • make more!
  • experiment a little?

1. i quite like this, the text size, colour and font are fitting and
well placed. the stock is simple but works well with the banner
and the colouring is really good as well; sort of subtle but it adds
a really nice touch. the only problem i have with this banner is
the girl; i kind of get the feeling that the placement or picture
in general is a little awkward or out of place on the banner. i
would suggest altering this a little

2. i left the banner for last because i wasn't really sure what
to say about it. i truly like it, i feel that it's different, just like
banner 3 and i'd say it's a keeper.

3. i really like this. it's a bit odd and even a little creepy, it's
strange and unusual; i can't pin-point faces but that's something
i really like about it. it captured my eye almost immediately when
i came to your gallery because it really stood out and all i could
think was 'wow, that's so cool' because it's, i dunno if i'm using
the right word, but fun to look at? the text works with it well.

4. i like the concept of this and you managed to fit in 4 people
(and 5 zombies) without it looking cluttered - mainly because
of the simplicity of the stock. the only thing i find off about this
banner is the use of text - i'm not sure if it's the font or placement
but i think it's bringing the banner down a little.

5. i love this! the whole mood of the banner fits in so well with
the stock and colouring you've used. i think the text is fitting,
it's dark and that fits the mood and concept of the banner. the
candles really add to this banner too - so well done with that.

6. this is my favorite! i absolutely love everything about it, it's
both interesting and really nice to look at - you've got everything
down nicely; composition, text, colouring, contrast. love, love, love

7. this is a weaker banner of yours, you're really good at banners
- i would go as far to say that they're your strength but you could
do better than this banner, and that's what i want to see. i'd suggest
getting rid of this banner. the colouring is great though, i will add.

8. again, a weaker banner. the text is kind of awkward and although
the colouring is good i don't think it would help you get promoted.
  • remember to put a space between your banners (a clean gallery is a good gallery)
  • nice use of stock
  • good colouring
  • watch for text
  • placement is important
  • experiment!

1. i wouldn't say that sigs are your strong point but the only way to
improve is to practice, so i'd say make a couple more sigs and another
set of icons (you don't have to post them in your gallery, but it's always
good just to try them out.) now, what's wrong with this sig is probably
the text, especially the word 'bound' i feel as though it doesn't really
compliment the sig. although i will tell you that the stock is super pretty
and although the colouring/texture is a bit unusual, i think it's quite
different in a nice way. i think with some altering you should probably
keep this.

2. this seems a little awkward. the stock/images don't really suit
the graphic and the text isn't really complimenting the sig like it should.
the text is several different colours and makes the sig seem a little busy?
i'd suggest kicking this one.

3. this is probably one of your better sigs - although, again the text
isn't really doing it (i think it's the colour/thickness of the stroke) but
i quite like the simplicity of it, as well as the concept.

(i really like your current sig though)

  • make some more
  • look out for text (font, placement, stroke)
  • nice colouring

chapter images
1. Avril looks a little over-sharpened in this, as does the rest of the
ci. i will complement you on her eyes - they're a really striking part
of the graphic. sorry for sounding like a broken record but text. your
text was quite good on your banners but seem to be weaker everywhere
else (i'm not sure if it's because you you haven't recently made any
ci/sigs/blends) but it's a really important part of a graphic and you truly
need to watch out for it.
  • watch over-sharpening
  • text, text, text!
  • make some more

1. this blend is fairly good, i suppose, the stock is a bit odd but i think
it suits the blend well. again, there's a problem with the text. and i know
you listed it as a weakness and there isn't much advice i can give you to
fix it because you already have the resources and the knowledge - all you
need to add the the equation is time and practice.

2. this kind of reminds me of the blend above; bright, with psd images?
i would say this is your weakest blend and suggest you kick it.

3. this! i utterly love this! the text is great, the graphic fits your style
(kind of creepy but super interesting and dark) and really fits in well
to your gallery. i truly love this concept and graphic.
  • text
  • nice concepts

you're doing well, some of your banners are senior material but the rest of your gallery is slightly bringing it down. you're tallented and have a lot of potential to grow as a graphic artist but several things are stopping you from getting promoted:
weaknesses: text, not experimenting, signatures
strengths: banners, composition, colouring, contrast

all i can really tell you is to keep going; things like this take time and experience. you really need to focus on improving text because you have a really great style and i think it's bringing your sigs, chapter images and blends down. i hope i wasn't too harsh because you are quite talented, especially in banners - sorry this took so long
