Hey Lucy! Here with your critique~
First impression: I really like your gallery. There's a lot of fantastic colour in here, a lot of creativity, and it's clear you can handle different graphic types easily. Just one thing I think you could change right away - there's a lot in here. I think your gallery could maybe benefit from being stripped back a bit so only your very best work is in here. Try no more than four to six banners, four chapter images, etc.
Your text is actually lovely and I'm not sure that's what you need to work on. It's beautiful on your 'answers await' signature and the placement is amazing on that 'hush' banner. I'd agree that your text is mostly simplistic, but I think that works best of all. What matters to me is that the text on all your graphics is clear and easy to read. A lot of people tend to just stick it on top at the end of their graphic, but on your graphics it's well integrated. So! No worries as far as I'm concerned c:
I wouldn't say you have a tendency towards symmetry either. To be honest, the odd graphic sizes required by HPFF (and thus made at TDA) make composing graphics quite tricky. Symmetry is often just the best option on a long, thin canvas like a banner. For example, your 'ignite your bones' banner has quite a symmetrical composition, but it works really well because the images of Frida and Andrew you've used are looking in different directions and are different sizes, and you have the text in the background framing them. I see there's a couple of graphics in here where you've actually used reflective symmetry, but you've done it very subtly and I think it's a good thing, not something you have to change!
Something I noticed going through this gallery is that, in places, your style can look a little inconsistent. The way I see it, you have quite a clear individual style that uses textures and simple backgrounds, but then halfway through your banners section you have this 'ashes to ashes' banner that's all curly script and stock and monochrome colouring, which looks a little more like the classic TDA style. It's not exactly a bad thing, and it's a good graphic in itself, but it looks very out of place here.
I'm not really sure I have many general pointers to give (you've actually got a wonderful gallery) so I think I might just focus more on the hitch/ditch aspect of the crit.
hitch or ditch
Icons: you might want to consider splitting up your icons from their canvases and just presenting the best of both groups separately. Like, the sets work well on their own, but each set has stronger and weaker icons within and just presenting the best on their own is maybe better for a gallery? Idk~
Signatures: I would consider taking out your 'caustic' sig. The cutout shape behind the girl is really awkward, and the monochromatic right side is really dominant and overpowers the image of the girl. If it wasn't for the beautiful text, I would also consider removing the 'answers await' sig. The larger girl seems quite LQ, and the way you've layered textures makes the sig look messy.
Banners: I'm not quite sure the 'skeleton close' banner quite comes off - the colouring is just a bit too flat, although I like what you've done with the larger Clemence Poesy in the background. For the opposite reason, I think you should take out your 'trust and hope' and 'midsummer night's dream' banners - the colouring is quite harsh, especially on the latter. 'Trust and hope' also leans far too heavily towards the right, whereas 'midsummer night's dream' has some sloppy blending and the text placement is quite awkward. Your Finnick & Annie banner is lovely and minimalistic, but the text is just a bit too small and the join between Alex Pettyfer and the girl looks quite awkward.
Chapter images: I think the last one could maybe come out. The composition is really nice, but the layered textures in the bottom half look quite messy.
Blends: the yin-yang blend is a nice idea, but the shape edges are pixellated and this brings the graphic down. There's also a bit too much going on - maybe one image per side would look a bit better. Your Kiko Mizuhara blend has a nice monochrome colouring but, again, the layered textures at different opacities make it look messy.
And on a more positive note…
Definitely keep your first two banners - they're amazing! Also keep that first set of CIs; I think the last one is my favourite, but they're all very creative and atmospheric. Your manips are also really good, so keep those in. I'm really impressed by the last one!
All in all, this is a really nice gallery - it could maybe do with a bit of weeding out, but it's lovely. Thank you for requesting crit and I hope this was helpful!
