Digging for Gold: An Interview

As DA Digest Editor, I got exclusive access to this month's golden artist, and was able to ask them a few questions to get to know the real person behind the shine! Enjoy.

1. What was your reaction when you first found out you won Featured Artist?
Happy dancing all around!!! I might have looked a little crazy to bystanders   :P
giphy.gif giphy.gif
2. What has the past month been like as Featured Artist?
It's been so amazing.   I've admired Featured Artists ever since I started out here, so it's surreal to finally be one! It's been a little bittersweet because my summer job has been so intense that I haven't been able to be online as much this month, but just waking up everyday and realizing I'm FA is such an awesome feeling! It puts such a huge smile on my face to see my name in gold. :3
3. What's brings you back to TDA every day?
The people, 100%! TDA is such a unique, rare community in that it's built on such a strong foundation of support and kindness. (Just look at how active the squee thread always is!) Everyone is always so encouraging of their fellow artists, and that positivity I think is what makes artists so successful. I don't know many other places that are so filled with friendliness and kindness!
4. Where do you find the time to do all the things you do around the site?!
Hehehehe that's my secret...    :shiftyeye:
Nah honestly it's because I'm a college student, so I have a ridiculously flexible schedule.   :P I finish classes by noon every day, so I have massive chunks of free time with which I can get on here. It helps that TDA is one of my main channels of stress relief -- it feels so good to log on here and do mod work, or browse the challenges and make graphics! That's why I'm (ironically) the most active here during exam times   :P
This summer's been especially nice since my summer job is only 6 weeks, so I have the entire months of June and August to myself! Anticipate seeing lots of me again next month.    :creepy:
5. What are some tricks of the trade you've learned?
Oh man, there's one trick that blew my mind when I found out about it from critiques and tutorials here, which is (for PS users) setting a black and white gradient map on Luminosity to evenly up contrast and bring out colors. I use it now on everything I make!! I used to fiddle around for sooooo long with Curves and Brightness/Contrast to no avail before I learned that trick.
Also, it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time (I'm talking years and years) to realize what adjustment layers were.   :P I used to merge visible and color directly on layers...which meant that every time I wanted to go back and fix something small in the base, I had to delete all the coloring layers and then afterward try to recreate it all from memory. What a party.
6. What do you think makes your graphic style special or unique?
I don't know if it's unique or special, but my style is definitely influenced a lot by my personality! I'm a bit of a clean freak, so I really value cleanliness and brightness in my living and working spaces. I feel a lot more relaxed in bright, open, and airy spaces, and on the converse it's hard for me to focus when I'm surrounded by clutter.
I think that translates a lot into my graphics -- I really favor leaving open (ie. negative) space. I actually like to finish each graphic by removing things -- to me, if an image/element isn't 100% necessary to a graphic, then there's no need to keep it in. I'm always toggling with the visibility option on layers, testing what the graphic looks like with/without each part.
7. What's your advice to artists who are just starting out, or are in a rut?
Graphics are a numbers game! It's just practice, practice, practice. The more graphics you make (and the more critique, viewpoints, and inspirations you seek and implement) the more you'll advance. Even now, for every graphic that goes in my gallery, there are 2-3 that I made just before that I didn't love. I like to think of every piece I make as practice for the next awesome one that gets to go in my gallery; it's absolutely true that you learn something from every thing you make!
On a similar note, I think it's super important to refresh your resources every few months. Take some time whenever you feel "stale" to find new images, textures, stock, fonts etc. Sometimes new resources are all it takes to find inspiration again and feel like a new person   :P
That said, if you're in a real rut, I think that sometimes the very best thing you can do is to take a break. It's super important to remember that graphics are a hobby and should never be a source of stress -- in fact, they should be relieving stress! If you're at a place where opening your graphics program and making things becomes less than fun, then I think that's a sign you're reaching burnout and should take care of yourself. You should always come first! Sometimes you need a few days and sometimes even a few (or more) months, but you should always remember that you are 1000% entitled to however long you need to relax and return to a good place.
And a final question from last month's FA, Hannah:
8. What, in your opinion, is the best joke, meme or pun of all time?
This the question I've always wanted to be asked    :joker:
People may not know this, but I practically eat memes and puns for breakfast every day. They're my lifeblood! A significant portion of the storage on my phone is dedicated to memes I've screenshot and saved. Over the holidays when we're away from each other, my best friend is treated to a weekly collection of terrible jokes and memes I specially curate for her.    :creepy:
As for the best joke/meme/pun...I have a huge spot for dad jokes, but I think for a question of this magnitude, it's immensely important to give proper due to a timeless classic of the meme canon: doge. I think of doge as the most generous of memes -- despite its age, it still keeps on giving laugh after laugh after laugh. It's accessible to people of all ages, it combines cute and funny, and it's immensely versatile (see, for example, one of my favorite variations: doge doughnuts)! Plus it's so much fun to read aloud.
So yes. Doge is the best meme of all time.    :creepy:    :shiftyeye:

TDA/Graphicking and How It Helps Me Conquer My Mental Health Issues

 by apsara.

I have mentioned it off and on (and to some people, in detail), that I suffer from some major mental health issues—namely Anxiety Disorder, Clinical Depression, and PTSD. In the past two years, my issues had gotten worse, and I had so many mental breakdowns that on more than one occasion, I’d had to be rushed to the hospital. So, a few months back, when my therapist suggested I take up something creative to help relieve my stress and anxiety, I finally got properly into Photoshop, and through some miracle, found this amazing site called TDA.

What started out as a hobby; as a means of escape; has now become my saviour, both literally and figuratively. In the months since I joined TDA and got into graphic-making, my mental health has seen a marked improvement. Logging on to TDA every morning, checking my notifications, my messages, the PYLC thread; and later, messing around with PS, is more than just routine—it’s what keeps me sane, and helps me get me through breakdowns and panic attacks and dark thoughts. Since February (i.e, when I became a Member Artist), I’ve barely had a few serious anxiety breakdowns—far, far less than last year—and it’s all because I had graphic-making, and this wonderful community of amazing artists and people to help me when things got hard.

These last few weeks have been especially difficult, due to some unforeseen RL troubles, and there were multiple times where I was on the verge of full-blown panic breakdowns, but the only reason I kept going, the only reason I survived and got through it all was because I had TDA. I would log on, and have a bunch of messages in my inbox that would be so supportive and warm that it would always make me feel better. I would look through pylc and squee thread, and feel inspired—feel motivated to make graphics, and to get through the hurdles life has been throwing at me. I don’t know where I’d be without TDA, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this. Even a tiny chat in the shoutbox, a gallery comment, a squee, or even, filling a request, gives me so much pure, unadulterated joy that it fills me with hope that someday, I’d be 100% okay, and that there is good in this world. Things are still not perfect, and I still struggle with a lot of issues and ailments, but TDA always, always makes it better.

So with this column, I’d like to thank each and every member of TDA—even those who I might not know or haven’t interacted with personally. Thank you for always being so kind and so amazing, for always motivating me, and for making this community feel like home.

Raving Reviews

The Commissaire Adamsberg Series
by hannibal

A book series I've been working my way through this year is the Commissaire Adamsberg series by French author Fred Vargas. Though the originals are written in French, the English translations are excellent, and I can safely say they are my favourite books, perhaps ever!

The series follows Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, a police chief in Paris who works in a slightly strange way, but always gets results, much to the annoyance of his more by-the-book colleagues. He is inattentive, unconventional, and often downright indifferent, but still has all the charm of a small, dark Frenchman just trying to do his job and catch some of the stranger villains of Paris. The books are lighthearted, funny and will keep you guessing til the very end.

The first book of eight in the series is called L'homme aux cercles bleus (The Chalk Circle Man) and I would seriously recommend them to everyone - no knowledge of French required!

Behind The Scenes: An Interview

1. What was your reaction when you found out you won MOTM?
To be honest, I was completely stunned and yet so excited and honored at the same time!!
2. What's your TDA story? (How you found us, why you're here, what brought you to graphics making, etc.)
I found out about TDA roughly four years ago when I joined HPFF. I had always admired looking at all the wonderful graphics being made so when I joined in July, I really had my heart set on eventually making graphics. I applied to be the Off-Topic Mod in October 2015 because I thought that would help me in not only giving back to TDA, but also to really acquaint myself with how things were done and the people. I was excited when I got the Mod position. Then one of my goals for 2016 was to actually learn how to make graphics. I didn't have any clue what I was doing when I signed up for BBLB, but I was supported by my Big Buddy, Mini and lots and lots of other amazing artists here at TDA. (You know who you are!!! Thank you so much!!) And that is where I am today!  :)
3. What's your favorite thing about TDA?
Honestly, everything. I love the games, the resources, the people, the atmosphere, the challenges, all the ways art can be expressed, and the helpfulness of everyone.
4. What inspires you?
I have a lot of things that inspire me. Music, driving in the car and seeing the way the light comes through the trees or reflects off of a watery surface, flowers, grass, looking for images to use in future graphics, looking at the galleries of the other artists, scrolling through the PYLC thread when I'm checking it, looking at the different requests being made.
5. What's your favourite graphic type?
I really enjoy making signatures mostly because they are easier than a banner, but harder than an icon.
6. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Hawaii. I visited there this past winter and I absolutely fell in love with the culture, food/drinks, weather and beaches. I live in a state where we experience winter, so I wouldn't mind leaving it behind to enjoy a more relaxed and warmer life in Hawaii. The only downside is it is much more expensive there then here.
7. If you were stuck eating only three items of food for the rest of your life, what would they be?
This is a tough question... I think I would have to say, Hot tamales (the candy), Pizza, and Salad.
8. How is your summer going so far? Any fun plans?
My summer is going well so far. I just finished coaching one of my son's baseball team, next up is Cub Scout Camp (I'm the Cubmaster - Leader) then it will be working and relaxing as much as possible before I have to have back surgery this fall. We will probably take the family camping or to a zoo and then maybe the fair/parade at the end of August too.

Got any questions you'd like to see answered in next month's interview?

Salut, toi!

-- by hannibal

Hey, cou-cou toi! Remember me? This is just a short and sweet note to explain that I took a quick break from TDA but am now back and ready to roll! In my absence I graduated from uni, moved house and joined the dreaded world of the unemployed! But unemployment means, you guessed it, more time to spend on the DA Digest  ;) So I'll be back working on the monthly newsletter from now, bringing you all the quality content you're used to, just with a little more Georgie added into the mix!

I'd like to thank everyone who worked on the Digest in my absence, especially Spencer, Mini and Vashti for keeping the ship afloat. You all know the Digest is my pride and joy, and with all the time I've worked on it, I could never give up on it completely! So to start off, I want to hear your suggestions on what you want to see in the DA Digest in the coming months! Please leave a comment or drop me a PM if you have any ideas  :loves:

Kay visits London

resource pack by Enigma

Ah, London, the UK's capital and home of some of the most famous buildings in the world. I have the fortune of living close by, but I know that for many people, it is a place they would love to visit. (I would definitely recommend doing so, by the way). This month, Kay has provided us with a gorgeous stock pack of photos from around London, including architecture, greenery and... bubbles! I know these pictures will be useful for many HP-related graphics, and much more besides. So go check it out, and don't forget to leave a comment! Thanks, Kay!

Tutorial Spotlight:

hot typewriter text

tutorial by herz&seele

Everyone knows Edmund is the King of Animation. And if you haven't seen any of his masterpieces, you must have been living under a rock! This month, Ed had provided us with a simple but very useful tutorial on how to create typewriter-like text in Photoshop, and it looks delightful! Better yet, it is surprisingly easy! So go check out the tutorial and don't forget to leave a comment, and let's all hope Ed continues to give away all his tricks of the trade for our usage  ;)
